Desalination past the 100-million-m³/day mark: what the project data shows
Global installed desalination capacity has passed 100 million m³ per day across roughly 20,000+ plants — and reverse osmosis now dominates new builds.
Industry datasets (IDA/GWI) put cumulative installed desalination capacity past 100 million cubic meters per day, spread across on the order of twenty thousand facilities worldwide. The Gulf remains the anchor market, but capacity growth has broadened decisively into North Africa, India, China and Southeast Asia.
The technology story is unambiguous: seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) accounts for the large majority of new contracted capacity, displacing thermal MSF/MED except in specific cogeneration contexts. Record projects — Taweelah in Abu Dhabi (~900,000 m³/day), Saudi Arabia's Rabigh 3 (600,000 m³/day) — have pushed unit energy consumption toward the 3 kWh/m³ range with modern energy-recovery devices.
