Ozonation & Advanced Oxidation
Ozone and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) generate powerful oxidants — ozone itself and hydroxyl radicals — to break down micropollutants, taste-and-odour compounds and colour, increasingly required for micropollutant removal in wastewater.
Overview
Ozone is a strong oxidant and disinfectant applied in drinking-water and, increasingly, tertiary wastewater treatment. Advanced oxidation processes boost performance by generating hydroxyl radicals — even stronger, non-selective oxidants — enabling destruction of persistent organics that survive conventional treatment.
The EU's recast wastewater directive, mandating quaternary treatment for micropollutants at large plants, is a structural driver for ozonation and AOP capacity across Europe. This article is a stub pending expert review.
